Dr. Michael A. Giardello is a founder of the company and serves as President and CEO. From 1993 - 1995, Dr. Giardello was a post-doctoral fellow with Professor Grubbs at Caltech. He then founded a technology consulting firm serving numerous established and start-up companies commercializing catalyst and resin technologies as well as venture capital firms as a consultant to manage all aspects of technology and start-up corporate development. In October 1997, Dr. Giardello co-founded Materia and served as Executive Vice President and CTO from January 1998 until February 1999 when he became President & CEO.

 

Dr. Mark S. Trimmer is Executive Vice President and the Vice President of Materials R&D at Materia. Dr. Trimmer received his B.S. from Penn State in 1983 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Caltech in 1988. Dr. Trimmer brings eleven years of experience at Maxdem, an entrepreneurial startup company, where he was involved with the development of a new class of high-performance thermoplastics and their corresponding markets, applications, and products. He has numerous publications and patents in these technical areas.

 

Mr. Christopher J. Cruce is a founder of the Company and serves as its Vice President of Product Development. Prior to joining Materia, Mr. Cruce founded a company which designs, manufactures, markets, and distributes numerous molded products for golf and other related industries. Mr. Cruce has extensive experience in the fields of product development, mold design, the injection molding process, and small-scale manufacturing including both method and design patents for novel injection molded parts.

 

Dr. Roger Baar is Materia’s Vice President of Operations. Dr. Baar comes to Materia with over twenty years of successful entrepreneurial management experience in technology markets. His experience includes serving as the President and CEO of GNP Computers which had peak annual sales of $100M and 200 employees, as the COO & Executive Vice President of Sales of Fastsoft a software startup company out of Caltech, and running a successful consulting firm that provided services to businesses on strategic planning, management training, operations, marketing, sales and accounting. Dr. Baar received his B.S. in chemistry from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in Inorganic Electrochemistry from Caltech.

 

Mr. Timothy McCarthy is the Vice President Marketing & Sales at Materia. Mr. McCarthy received a B.S. Degree in Economics and Chemistry from Wheaton College and an M.I.M from The American Graduate School of International Management (Thunderbird). His experience includes serving in numerous sales, marketing and business development positions at The Dow Chemical Company from 1987 to 1999 in the US and Europe. Additionally, Mr. McCarthy spent the past 10 years in the carbon fiber industry with Zoltek Companies, Inc. as the Managing Director of Zoltek Europe from 1999 to 2004 and then as Vice President of Sales and Marketing from 2004 to 2009.

 

Mr. Steven Chaffee is the Director of Finance at Materia. Mr. Chaffee received his MBA in 1997 from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN and has worked in several industries with over 15 years of experience as corporate controller.

 

Mr. Mark Isomaki is Materia’s Director of Operations. Mr. Isomaki received a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from California State University, Northridge in 1993. He has 6 years experience as a polymer chemist working with various high performance engineering thermoplastics. Prior to entering the field of Chemistry Mr. Isomaki worked as a toolmaker, tooling coordinator, and supervisor for Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company on numerous aircraft platforms including the F117A, SR-71, C-5, P-3, U-2, and TR-1. While at Lockheed he completed a Jig & Fixture Builder apprenticeship, and earned a Metal Machining Certificate from Los Angeles Valley College.


Mr. John Kibler is Materia’s Director of Corporate Development. Before joining Materia, Mr. Kibler helped commercially launch and later run a number of life science and alternative energy companies. Prior to these entrepreneurial efforts, Mr. Kibler worked in investment management for LaSalle Partners (now Jones Lang LaSalle), the world’s leading real estate services and money management firm. Mr. Kibler received his bachelor’s degree from Stanford University and his MBA from UCLA.

 

Dr. Richard L. Pederson is the Director of Fine Chemicals R&D at Materia. Dr. Pederson received his B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin River Falls in 1985 and his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Texas A & M University in 1990 while working under the supervision of Professor Chi-Huey Wong. Following his post doc, he joined Bend Research Inc, in Bend, OR where in 1997 he and Professor Robert H. Grubbs patented the production of insect pheromones using ruthenium metathesis catalysts. Dr. Pederson has spent the last sixteen years in entrepreneurial start-up companies developing new routes to pharmaceutical intermediates and insect pheromones while also managing numerous projects and technical personnel. Dr. Pederson is an inventor on 22 patents and patent applications, several of the key patents are related to the synthesis of metathesis catalyst ligands and to the use of metathesis in the production of insect pheromones.

 

Mr. Tony Stephen is Materia’s Director of Product Development. Mr. Stephen received a B.S. Degree in Chemistry from the University of Eastern Oregon. He has 9 years experience as a polymer chemist working with various high performance engineering thermoplastics. Prior to working at Materia, Mr. Stephen worked for 16 years at the USC School of Medicine in the area of bone and cancer research as a biochemist research scientist and Research Lab Supervisor.

 

Mr. Stuart A. M. Toner is the General Manager of Materia’s Huntsville, Texas manufacturing facilities. Mr. Toner has spent over 25 years working in the field of multi-component liquid reactive processing with multiple chemistries within the product lines of polyurethane, poly urea, phenolics, and most recently dicyclopentadiene (DCPD). He has been involved with DCPD since 1993 when he was appointed manager of the BF Goodrich Telene™ pDCPD R&D, technical service and applications development groups. Mr. Toner has worked in several different markets, including aerospace, transportation, construction and chemical processing. He holds a BSc. in mechanical engineering from Salford University in England.
