Various metathesis processes produce a wide variety of functional oligomers and polymers. An excellent example of this is a dihydroxy telechelic polymer. These telechelic materials have several important and growing industrial applications including the production of multi-block polymers such as styrene-butadiene-styrene (Kraton) and thermoplastic polyurethanes. High quality telechelic materials are, however, notoriously difficult or impossible to prepare by other methods. The figure below shows an example of telechelic synthesis.
