The Catalyst business unit manufactures and sells metathesis catalysts as well as provides process development services and technology licenses to corporate partners. The group also continues metathesis innovation with an internal R&D team and a close working relationship with the Grubbs group at Caltech.

Catalysts – Materia has developed more than 20 metathesis catalysts, a subset of which it sells both through Sigma Aldrich (research volumes) and direct (scale). Our catalyst portfolio is compatible with a wide range of transformations and operating conditions. Process Development – Materia does metathesis and metathesis only and this exclusive focus has enabled our market-leading catalyst application knowledge base. While we provide tips and preliminary guidance for free on our All Things Metathesis blog, partner sponsored process development can often help expedite efficient commercialization. Some of our fee-based services include catalyst screening and development, reaction optimization and scale-up, and pilot production.

Technology Licenses – Materia’s technology is protected by a dominant intellectual property portfolio that we license to industrial leaders. We typically sell our catalysts for non-commercial use under a standard Materia Label License and provide commercial rights under separate arrangements. These licenses provide access to our entire catalyst library, application know-how, patenting rights, and other commercial benefits. We believe this licensing strategy provides licensees with significant advantage by restricting direct competition as well as limiting broadly blocking application patents.
